Haus Fortuna Hosts 2nd Successful Tour To Umbria

Knight trying for the ring at La Quintana
Karla Schikore, owner of Haus Fortuna, recently returned from hosting 18 of her best customers on Haus Fortuna's second tour of the Umbrian region of Italy. Throughout the ten-day excursion, Karla introduced tour participants to her personal friends among the artisans, vintners, chefs and craftspeople who live and work in the lush, celebrated area known as the "Green Heart of Italy". Karla's choice of a single centrally located lodging allowed the tour participants to unpack just once, while the itinerary gave them ample time for individual exploration, shopping and relaxation.
A signature aspect of Karla's tours is the extraordinary level of personalization. For each meal, souvenir menus are printed. Tour participants are treated to lots of surprises, gifts and unique experiences. One such experience happened during the tour of the balsamic vinegar factory: the Balsamic Master allowed the group to do a tasting right from the barrels. Another delightful experience was the Spello Infiorata flower festival, where the group saw extraordinary artists arrange flower petals in the streets. When completed, the works looked like hand woven rugs.
Tour members also participated in a cooking class, where they cooked a variety of foods while wearing aprons specially embroidered with that day's date. The class teacher, Chef Archimede, signed each apron and presented each student a personal cookbook containing the recipes they had created that day along with his or her diploma. The class was followed by Italian dancing and singing.
One day, the group joined a truffle hunt held in a secret area and were accompanied by a truffle-hunting dog. Later, they lunched on fresh salmon trout caught at a trout farm situated in a beautiful area of woods and streams.
While visiting the medieval mountain town of Foligno, Karla's guests had the opportunity to witness the "La Quintana" -- a festival that dates from medieval times. They were fortunate to see knights competing on horseback, wearing costumes weighing from 30-50 pounds -- each knight using a 32-pound lance to snare a prized ring while galloping at full speed.
All tour participants enjoyed special discounts at the factories and artisan shops they visited. Haus Fortuna provided shipping for their treasured purchases, ensuring that everything arrived home safe and sound. So successful was this second tour that Karla already has 16 reservations for her third annual journey in 2007. For more information, call 707.283.2880.
